That's Jive!

So, I was talking with Family Dude some time ago, and we were talking about something or other I don't remember what exactly, but I said "That's jive, man." As in, "That's cold, man." or "That was a mean thing to do/say to *insert name of person(s) we were talking about*, Family Dude." It was then that he turned around, looked me straight in the eye, smirked and said "Did you say Jive???" I said...."um....yes, cuz that's jive what you said/did to ___." So, he busts out laughing, calms down, and begins to tell me in an olderly brother type of voice (though he's really my little brother). "Universa, we don't say Jive anymore, we use other terms." And then he proceeds with saying a long list of slang terms that have replaced the word Jive and wished it off to a happy retirement. But no.....I didn't listen. For, you see, the word Jive is embedded in my soul. I will always describe a rude or mean action as being Jive.

I was a bit devasted to learn that no one but me said Jive. It hurt me deep inside, and when I asked Adam about it, he too laughed, and thought it was funny, and had actually never heard that slang term being used. Feeling hopeless, I thought there must be someone out there that uses this immortal term. Someone that understands it's descriptive powers. After thinking for several days, I thought of the people who I knew in my heart would use the word Jive, and I instantly thought of my friend, Melissa. One evening, while we were driving through Greek Town, I asked her if she used the word Jive. She looked at me, raised her eyebrow, and said "uh, yeah" like duh, doesn't everybody. I was thrilled, it was as if the clouds parted and a beam of light shot through the darkness in the car, surrounding us, shielding us from those lackluster replacement slang terms.

So, to all of you who don't use this word, that's jive.
